Derbyshire Secularists and Humanists

Meetings and events

We do not hold regular meetings (what do atheists need to discuss - as atheists?) but we hold occasional public meetings and we function "virtually".

Derbyshire Secularists and Humanists operate virtually!

Atheists share only one thing in common: we are god-free. Apart from that we come from all sorts of different backgrounds and we have all sorts of interests and beliefs. Some of us as very liberal, some are socialists, some are conservatives (small "c" and large "C"). We tend to share a desire to question almost everything so putting two atheists together is an almost certain way to start a discussion/argument about something or other - though not about "the god bit" - that we don't need to argue about.

We atheists don't need to get together to reinforce our non-belief and, like most people, we often have busy family, social or work lives. We don't need to sit around for hours discussing reasons why we don't believe in something or praying to a god that we neither need nor believe in.

Some of our supporters are very active locally representing the atheist/humanist line on all sorts of bodies - they simply do not have the time to be both active and to organise talks or debates

How does someone new find out about us?

After visiting this site (the Philosophy menu above is a good place to start) we recommend reading our booklet "A Guide to Humanism" which may be obtained free of charge by contacting us.

We can arrange one-to-one (or more) meetings at very short notice. If anyone wants to find out about us, or to discuss their changing ideas in relation to god and religion, we are happy to organise something at a mutually convenient time.

There is a lot of information on this site, and in the books and DVDs listed under the Resources menu above. We are always very happy to engage in email or phone conversations with anyone who wishes to find out more.

When events in the world require it we circulate an email newsletter - contact us to get on the mailing list.

When we meet, where do we meet?

We can arrange meetings in the local pub, in someone's home - anywhere convenient. We are infinitely flexible.

When we organise larger or public meetings we normally meet at the excellent and award-winning Multi-Faith Centre (MFC) situated in the grounds of Derby University, Kedleston Road, Derby. Directions:

  • The Kedleston Road campus is very easy to reach by public transport - city or University bus - from the centre of town, from the bus station or from the railway station.
  • The Multi-Faith Centre is on the left at the top of the drive just before the main university buildings.
  • If you come by car you need to check in at the security gate and they will direct you to the visitors' car park which is on the right at the top of the drive - about 80 yards from the Multi-Faith Centre.
